Why reality TV refuses to die

IN RETROSPECT, those scoffers - who said, back when Survivor was crouched in the get-set position, that reality TV was a fad that would soon crawl into a corner and expire - really should have seen this coming. With American Idol now in its 10th season and Survivor about to embark on its 22nd, it's clear that reality TV is now a full-fledged genre - not a fickle trend. Like it or not, sustainable ratings have fattened up other competition shows that enjoy more seasons than an ice cream store has flavours, like The Amazing Race and America's Next Top Model. They have also caused the proliferation of all kinds of other subgenres like the make-over clinics, the social experiments, the fly-on-the-walls about privileged or unusual lives, and, worst of all, the match-making games.
