Make Workfare work for the next generation

In extensive debate earlier this month, it was readily apparent that policymakers believe Workfare works well and is a preferred option to a minimum wage. Interestingly, an impressive approach towards helping poor families in other parts of the world may provide useful insights on how to make Workfare and other cash transfer programmes here help the next generation even more. According to Manpower Minister Gan Kim Yong, Workfare "helps our low-wage workers earn a better income". The income supplement scheme provides citizens above 35, making an income of less than $1,700 a month, with between $100 and $2,800 for a full-year payment (in cash and/or CPF, including Medisave, payouts). Eligible recipients must have worked for a minimum period, with the goal being to encourage older low-wage workers to work regularly. The current programme grants payouts unconditionally to such...
