Johor waterworks handover: 2,550-hectare compound was home to employees

It was their only home. Workers and their families lived, ate, played and went to school within the 2,550-hectare area under their charge, which covered Gunung Pulai, Pontian, Scudai and Tebrau. There was a primary school, a provision shop, a dispensary and places of worship. The cradle-to-grave style of management adopted by first the British, and later the Singapore Government through the PUB, forged a closely knit community in which many children wanted nothing more than to work in the same water treatment plants where their parents did.
