US hiring dries up, Dow tanks in early trade

WASHINGTON - The United States economy failed to add jobs for the first time in almost a year, raising the risk of a return to recession and ratcheting up the pressure on policymakers to revive a moribund labour market. Investors dumped stocks on the news, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average down 1.9 per cent at 11,280 about half an hour after the opening bell in New York. Across the Atlantic, London's FTSE shed 2.9 per cent and Germany's DAX plunged 4 per cent. Earlier in Asia, profit-taking ahead of the data saw China's Shanghai Composite, Hong Kong's Hang Seng and Japan's Nikkei down 1.1 per cent, 1.8 per cent and 1.2 per cent, respectively. Singapore's Straits Times Index lost 0.8 per cent to 2,843.09.
