In the five years I and my family have lived in Singapore, much has been said about its problem with a low birth rate. At first, I was fascinated because in the country where I grew up, it has never been a problem. I was surprised to find out that here, the Government entices people to have babies with incentives such as the Baby Bonus and Parenthood Tax Rebate. Yet, the birth rate continues to plunge. On the other hand, people have shared their concerns about why, despite the incentives, they just can't raise a family. Recently the cost of living came up again as the top reason. I can't help but wonder that there might be more to the issue that we're missing. While it is true the high cost of living challenges parenthood, it is not a total deterrent.
