4G wireless spectrum auction to take place in 2012 (via ST iPhone App)

The Government will hold an auction for 4G wireless spectrum rights next year. -- PHOTO: REUTERS SPECTRUM rights for 4G, the next generation of wireless services, will go on the auction block next year. The Government will ask for bids for at least four lots of these invisible airwaves in which data traffic travels wirelessly. This will be enough for that number of players to roll out an islandwide high-speed mobile data service, said the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA) on its website on Monday. The 2.3/2.5Ghz spectrum is now being used by five companies - SingTel, StarHub, M1, QMax and PacketOne. They had, in 2005, bid successfully for the right to use that spectrum for various wireless broadband-related services until 2015.
