Health: Here's a reality check on snacking during Chinese New Year

AFTER every Chinese New Year, three things usually happen to me: My bank account slims down; my weight goes up by two to three kilos; and I also either get a sore throat or a really bad case of indigestion. While there's no escaping from giving out hongbaos (if you're married), the latter two problems can easily be avoided by simply being less of a glutton during the festive season. Ms Lydia Tan, a dietitian at the Health Promotion Board's (HPB) Adult Health Division, said: "Overeating is very likely to happen during this festive season, especially when we are constantly offered food when we go visiting." An immediate and uncomfortable effect is indigestion. Dr Melvyn Wong, senior physician at Raffles Medical, said the clinic tends to see an increase of such cases during and after festive breaks.
