Pattaya Beach could disappear in the next 5 years due to sand erosion

BANGKOK - The world-famous Pattaya Beach could disappear in the next five years due to sand erosion, a university researcher has predicted. Professor Thanawat Jarupongsakul, head of disaster studies at Chulalongkorn University's Science Faculty, released a paper that showed erosion at the beach being at a "critical" stage, the Bangkok Post reported. Business owners at the beach, which is popular with tourists, have resorted to stacking sandbags around deck chairs to prevent them from being swept away by waves, the paper said. The erosion is caused by a change in wave pattern, which has reduced the size of the beach area. The beach covered 96,000 sq m in 1952, with the distance to the water about 36m.
