(TODAY) Why not introduce local government elections?

Several years are likely to pass before Singaporeans vote again. The victors in both the General and Presidential elections have rightly talked of unity, but it is unclear how such unity might be achieved. An equally likely scenario is surely one of division and resentment, of many voters feeling frustrated that their electoral aspirations have not been fulfilled. Yet there is also a simple solution to this problem: The introduction of local government elections. No major city-state, or indeed city of any kind of Singapore's size, economic complexity and social diversity, has only one level of elected government. Hong Kong and Kuwait, for example, have two, while Vancouver has three. Elected local government might be felt to introduce inefficiencies, but it has three key advantages. First, it promotes a civic engagement in local affairs that supplements the "helping hands"...
