Volunteers spring clean homes of elderly residents

SINGAPORE : Elderly residents living alone at Block 31 in Toa Payoh East got a helping hand to spring clean their home for Lunar New Year. Joining the Women's Executive Committee on the project were students from St Joseph's Institution International (SJII). Chairman of Toa Payoh East Women's Executive Committee, Catherine Ong, has been organising clean-up activities for elderly residents in the block for seven years. She also knows the residents well from organising lunches for them for the past 25 years. However, this year was special. Besides cleaning the six homes in two hours, the team of 14 students and committee members also put up Lunar New Year decorations. Madam Ong said she started the project when she found the residents, in their 60s and 70s, living in dirty conditions, sometimes with pests.
