US stocks mixed as earnings disappoint

NEW YORK: US stocks closed flat on Tuesday after a slew of mixed corporate earnings and ahead of a key annual speech by President Barack Obama to Congress. The Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 3.33 points (0.03 percent) to finish at 11,977.19. The broad-market S&P 500 index advanced a mere 0.34 point (0.03 percent) to 1,291.18 and the tech-rich Nasdaq rose 1.70 points (0.06 percent) to 2,719.25. "Mixed US economic and earnings reports, as well as concerns over global economic growth, hampered equities for most of today's session, but stocks were able to pare those losses with a late-day dash toward to the flatline to finish mostly unchanged," Charles Schwab analysts said in a client note.
