New initiative to promote informal volunteerism

SINGAPORE - A new initiative to promote informal volunteerism has been launched. The initiative, called "Vertical Kampong", will be managed by the National Volunteer and Philanthropy Centre (NVPC). It was announced yesterday by Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong at the 21st International Association for Volunteer Effort World Volunteer Conference. In Singapore, 33 per cent volunteer informally, giving an average of 48 hours per year. Mr Goh believes more can be done to encourage volunteering. He said the challenge is to get individuals to recognise that everyone can be an informal volunteer. Explaining to delegates at the conference, Mr Goh said the initiative is named "Vertical Kampong" because more than 80 per cent of Singaporeans live in high-rise flats.
