I think you usually fill a cup with water because someone needs to drink. So the end objective is not to fill the cup and you want to fill the cup as quickly as you can because filling it too slowly may mean that the person who needs to drink may quench his thirst somewhere else. Now this is the same for Singapore, the end objective is not to fill the country with people but to sustain the economy that is still heavily dependent on labor. Can we shift to another model? Certainly, but it takes time and it may not be successful so it is not right to do an about turn now, more citizens will suffer. I think what is required is to explain why the cup needs to be filled up this fast and whether we can slow down the process to avoid overspilling, or maybe we need another cup but we should not switch off the tap.
