8 dead, 2 missing after a mudslide engulfed several villages in Northern Thailand (AFP)

BANGKOK (AFP) - Eight people were killed and two were missing after a mudslide engulfed several villages in a mountainous region of northern Thailand, officials said on Friday. The landslide swept across three villages in Nam Pat district of Uttaradit province in the early hours of Friday morning, the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation department said. Around 900 people are thought to be affected, with damage to their homes or businesses, but rescue efforts were hampered by the destruction of a concrete bridge that links the villages to the main road. Thailand has suffered continual flooding since July.
