Robust exports swell S. Korea current account: SEOUL: South Korea's current account surplus rose in December fro...

SEOUL: South Korea's current account surplus rose in December from the previous month due to strong exports, bringing the full-year surplus to the fourth largest on record, the central bank said on Thursday. The statistics are expected to further strengthen the won, which has risen 1.7 per cent against the dollar so far this year. The current account surplus was $2.11 billion last month, up from $1.93 billion in November, the Bank of Korea said on Thursday. That compares with a surplus of $708.7 million in December 2009. The account remained in surplus for a 10th consecutive month after recording deficits in January and February of 2010, as exports increased amid the global economic recovery. The full-year surplus was $28.21 billion, supported by strong exports of semiconductors and automobiles. In 2009 the country ran a surplus of $32.79 billion. Economists quoted by Dow ...
