This point was made recently, when a Straits Times reader bemoaned the lack of an interpreter or subtitling in the live telecast of the Prime Minister's National Day Rally speech. In his letter published on Aug 17, Mr Zhuang Kuan Song said: 'The only way for (the hearing-impaired) is to access the speech from other sources, newspapers and Internet after the telecast - not 'live' from the Prime Minister.' A week later, broadcaster MediaCorp responded. It said because the event was 'live', an accurate subtitling of the PM's speech was not possible as he had made many off-the-cuff remarks.
