The Best Cyclists Are Uncles Please

The roads in Singapore scare me – as a driver, pedestrian, jogger, and especially as a cyclist. After a few close calls with dump trucks careening at what must be close to 100km/h on 70km/h roads, I’ve decided not to risk my neck anymore. Strangely, it’s the cyclist with a $7,500 bike, togged in form-fitting, garish Lycra that can be in greater danger than the neighbourhood uncle who scoots around in slippers on an ancient, rusty bike. A study in the journal Accident Analysis & Prevention confirms this: When motorists see a cyclist with a helmet, they think he’s more predictable, and thus don’t give him as wide a berth. That probably explains why that uncle I saw yesterday cut across four lanes of traffic with nary a worry.
