23 Indian children get HIV from blood transfusions

AHMADABAD, India (AP) - Officials in western India say at least 23 children suffering from a rare genetic disorder have tested positive for HIV after receiving tainted blood transfusions. The head of a government hospital in Gujarat, G.T. Dayalu, said on Monday that the children had received free blood transfusions at the hospital between January and August. State government spokesman Jai Narayan Vyas says a team of doctors has been sent to investigate. News reports quoted Mr Vyas as saying that many of the infected children had received blood from more than one hospital.
