Health minister on length of stay in nursing homes:

SINGAPORE : Singapore's Health Minister, Khaw Boon Wan, said the length of stay in nursing homes here should be reduced from years to months. In his latest blog entry, he said nursing homes in Australia work to help patients return home within months, and asked why this could not be done here. Understanding that patients here prefer ageing at home, he said there needs to be a new emphasis here on rehabilitation and functional recovery as opposed to long-term custodial care. A change to a home-centric approach will mean nursing homes will have to think more about helping patients maintain contact with their families. This will translate into more frequent daily visits and even weekend home leave arrangements for patients.
