British tourist acquitted after $5,000 compensation to victim

SINGAPORE - A British tourist who faced one count of molest here has been acquitted of the charge in a district court, today. Qatar-based recruitment specialist, Austin Charles Arnold Cowburn, 35, was accused of grabbing a 30-year-old woman's buttock at Clarke Quay's China One Pub on Apr 3. But he is now a free man after giving her a S$5,000 compensation. Cowburn also apologised to the woman who sat grim-faced in the gallery with her husband. Represented by lawyer, Mr Thangavelu, Cowburn said he would like to convey his apologies for any outrage of modesty she suffered as a result of any "inadvertent actions" on his part. Dressed in a pinstripe suit, the Briton looked relieved when District Judge Francis Remedios acquitted him and he was seen thanking his lawyer profusely for his help.
