Downtown East stabbing: Suspects no longer face death penalty, with charges reduced from murder to rioting

SINGAPORE - Four youths accused of killing a 19-year-old student at the Downtown East entertainment hub in Pasir Ris, last year, have had their murder charges reduced to that of rioting. Chong Rui Hong and Ng Wei Lun, both 19, Puay De Feng, 20, and Jason Chew Wei Beng, 21, had faced the prospect of being sent to the gallows. Instead, the young men now face up to seven years' jail and caning if convicted of rioting. All four are now accused of being members of an unlawful assembly who caused grievous hurt to Darren Ng Wei Jie on Oct 30. Court documents stated that one or more members of the group allegedly stabbed and slashed the Republic Polytechnic student with knives, choppers and a screwdriver.
