Graduates starting pay higher this year despite slowdown

By Aaron Low, Economics Correspondent THE economic uncertainty has not stemmed the demand for local graduates, with firms raising the starting salaries for recruits. Fresh graduates this year are getting slightly more than their counterparts last year, as foreign firms look to expand operations here, according to two separate salary surveys. Management consultancy Hay Group said the average monthly salary of a fresh graduate in an entry-level job was $2,593, a touch higher than the $2,540 last year. Related Links ENTRY LEVEL SALARIES The survey, which was done in July and polled 100 firms, showed that engineering graduates had the highest average starting pay of $2,745, followed by legal jobs, which paid $2,738.
