Researchers from the National Heart Centre Singapore (NHCS) have successfully created beating heart cells from skin cells. -- ST PHOTO: DESMOND FOO By Melissa Pang Researchers from the National Heart Centre Singapore (NHCS) have successfully created beating heart cells from skin cells. These cells have the potential to replace the need for heart transplants in patients suffering from heart failure. Safety and feasibility tests for such a clinical application began in August. While creating beating heart cells from skin cells is not new, the NHCS team has managed to do so using a virus-free technique that eliminates the risk of infection. Associate Professor Philip Wong, director of the Research and Development Unit at NHCS, described the technique as a 'game changer for stem cell work and cell therapy for the heart'.
