19-year-old First driver to have licence suspended under amended law

SINGAPORE - A 19-year-old has become the first driver here to have his licence suspended immediately under amendments to the Road Traffic Act, in November last year. He had been involved in an accident on Jan 16 which killed a 24-year-old male pedestrian. The driving licence is usually only suspended after a motorist is formally charged in court with serious offences such as drink-driving, reckless or dangerous driving where death or serious injury is caused. With the change in the law, however, the Traffic Police can immediately suspend the driving licence of any motorist who causes serious injury or death to a person or serious damage to buildings and structures once they start investigations.
