The self-help group is targetting to help 11,500 students and workers from low-income backgrounds, to ensure that ability to achieve their potential is not hampered by lack of funds. -- ST PHOTO: DESMOND WEE MORE needy Chinese Singaporeans will get an extra leg-up from the Chinese Development Assistance Council (CDAC) to rise above their humble origins and move up the social ladder. The self-help group is targetting to help 11,500 students and workers from low-income backgrounds, to ensure that ability to achieve their potential is not hampered by lack of funds. This is up from 9,500 beneficiaries last year. To do so, CDAC will put aside more money - $3.74 million, up from $2.8 million last year - to fund programmes that promote upward social mobility.
