Indonesians protest over Egypt

JAKARTA: Some 200 activists took to the streets in downtown Jakarta to show their solidarity with the Egyptian pro-democracy movement. They carried placards condemning the violence against protesters by Egyptian authorities. The demonstrators are mainly Indonesians who once studied in Egypt. They urged the Indonesian government to apply diplomatic pressure on the Mubarak government to implement reforms. There are more than 6,000 Indonesian nationals in Egypt. Two thirds are students studying in universities there. Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has instructed all Indonesians in Egypt to evacuate. The decision was made on Monday afternoon after an emergency meeting with key ministers. President Yudhoyono said the situation in Egypt has deteriorated. A transport plane is being prepared to fly out of Jakarta Monday night, to bring back the Indonesians from Egypt.
