Teen duo win The New Paper School Sports Star award

They may not have topped the charts in terms of public voting, but their stories were more than sufficient to make Timothee Yap, 16 and Syasya Rifqah, 15 deserving of the inaugural The New Paper Schools Sports Star Award. Both received their $3,000 cash prize, trophy and certificates of participation from Minister for Education Mr Heng Swee Keat at Teck Whye Secondary School this morning. A total of 18 student-athletes were nominated for the award, with that number trimmed down to 10 finalists through public voting. The winners were decided based on public voting and a panel of judges. The finalists also received $500, a trophy and a certificate each while the remaining nominees were awarded certificates of participation. Hwa Chong International's Timothee, who is also pencilled in to represent Singapore at November's South-east Asia Games, said he will put aside his cash ...
