Singapore produces plenty of accountants but needs a lot more, says ACCA executive

Mr Darryl Wee of ACCA noted that though about 1,700 accountants are trained each year, the number is insufficient to meet market demand here. Singapore produces plenty of accountants but the country needs a lot more, according to an executive of a global accountancy body. Mr Darryl Wee, Singapore head of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), said on Tuesday that while there are a fixed number of places for accountancy graduates here, the number was 'not enough'. Mr Wee noted that the three local universities produce about 1,000 accountancy graduates a year and ACCA trains 650 to 700, but the number was insufficient to meet market demand. This is because some graduates leave for other professions and many of the rest get snapped up by a few major firms.
