Singapore schools must first get the basics right, says our reader. #SGedu

I WAS heartened to read last Friday's article on Education Minister Heng Swee Keat's speech ('Schools to stress values and character-building'). While I agree with Mr Heng about the need for 'a values-driven education', schools must first get the basics right. This is especially so for those in a laissez-faire school environment, where being 'independent' equates with encouraging students to challenge social conventions and common sense. For instance, while schools may advise parents to monitor the child's time spent on computer activities, schools are not inclined to control the use of smartphones in the classroom during curriculum time. Even organised and driven students are distracted and, inevitably, the influence of peers override the influence of the home.
