MRS MARGARET GOH: 'Did the Ministry of Education review whether the curriculum timeframe is sufficient to cover all syllabuses ('Schools to stress values and character-building'; last Friday)? I am concerned how Education Minister Heng Swee Keat's fresh emphasis on moral education and character-building can be incorporated into the current five- to six-hour school curriculum time. Will we end up replacing these subjects with English, mathematics or science lessons because teachers cannot complete the syllabuses? Or are students expected to stay longer in school or return to school more often during the holidays to catch up on the backlog? While Mr Heng encourages students to pursue a goal they are passionate about, we must review time management and set the interests and priorities of schools right first.'
