Sunshine Empire's case to go up to Court of Appeal

The High Court has allowed Sunshine Empire's boss James Phang Wah to bring his case up to the Court of Appeal. The founder of the multi-level-marketing (MLM) company, which is now defunct, had been sentenced to four and a half years of jail in 2010 after being convicted of running a fraudulent business, reported The Straits Times. He was also sentenced to another jail term of the same length and fined $60,000 for criminal breach of trust. The Court of Appeal will decide if Phang had knowingly carried out his company's operations with the intention to commit fraud. Should the appeal go in his favour, Phang's conviction may either be rendered invalid or a new trial could be ordered. He is currently serving his nine-year jail term.
