Restrict new PRs to 30,000 a year: WP chief Low Thia Khiang

SINGAPORE - Even as he agreed that Singapore should not be overly reliant on foreign labour, Workers' Party (WP) chief and Aljunied GRC MP Low Thia Khiang cautioned that measures to restructure the economy should be fair to companies of all sizes and should not lead to smaller companies being disadvantaged. Mr Low also noted that while enough foreign manpower had to be brought in to make up for the Republic's limited population, it invariably causes competition for jobs for Singaporeans. To that end, he suggested that the number of Permanent Residents given each year should be restricted to 30,000. Non-Constituency MP Gerald Giam also spoke of the need to "uplift" small-and-medium enterprises as we restructure the economy. He suggested the introduction of an SME scholarship, partly funded by the Government, to be awarded to top junior college and polytechnic students. Said...
