Chagas: Is tropical disease really the new AIDS? | The Lookout - Yahoo! News Singapore via @yahoosg

I just returned from the jungles of the Amazon. We were told about many diseases and infections you could get in the jungles, but never about this one. It would seem to me that this article may be a bit alarmist. If you read the article carefully, the disease is spread by an insect bite, not by sexual or blood contact. In that aspect alone, it is NOTHING like AIDS/HIV. In fact, the ONLY similarity is that both families of diseases are almost impossible to cure, once acquired. Since the bugs which spread the disease are native to South America, it is almost impossible for someone in North America to catch the disease, unless they travel to the south. A simple preventative measure, such as wearing bug repellant for visitors to those countries can make the chances of catching this disease almost nil.
