PENANG: Hong Kong student activist Joshua Wong said on Tuesday (May 26) he was denied entry to Malaysia when he arrived at the airport in Penang to attend a series of talks on democracy. In a Facebook post, the 18-year-old wrote: “The Malaysian government denied me entry, and I’m taking a return flight to Hong Kong.” “Why was I denied entry? The Malaysian immigration staff said 'Government order',” he added. A spokesperson for Malaysia's Minister for Home Affairs Zahid Hamidi confirmed that immigration authorities detained, then deported Wong. In response to queries, Malaysia's Home Ministry told Channel NewsAsia that the immigration department will be issuing a statement on the matter.
