Our reader asks: Why levy ERP on Saturday afternoons?

ELECTRONIC Road Pricing (ERP) gantries are in operation on Saturdays from noon to 8pm for vehicles entering the city from Nicoll Highway. And likewise for traffic from the west trying to use Nicoll Highway to reach the east. At least 75 per cent of offices in Raffles Place, Shenton Way, Suntec City and the surrounding areas are not open for business on Saturdays. Factories in Jurong and Bukit Merah are also mostly closed on Saturday afternoons. Vehicular traffic is thin during this period and the electronic parking space availability signboards show that most carparks in the Marina area are not filled, except perhaps during major exhibitions or festivals. The Land Transport Authority (LTA) says ERP controls traffic within the Marina Cordon. The Marina financial areas are closed on Saturdays; Marina South is under massive reconstruction; the Marina Centre/Suntec City areas ...
