At 60, the EU continues to inspire - The Straits Times

On March 25, 1957, the leaders of six European countries, namely, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg and the Netherlands, met in Rome and signed the Treaty of Rome. The treaty, which came into force in 1958, established the European Economic Community (EEC). It launched the European integration project. In 1993, the EEC became the European Union. The family has grown from the original six to 28. The United Kingdom will, however, leave the EU in March 2019. The EU faces a challenging period as it negotiates the terms of the UK's exit, and amid concern about whether Brexit might prompt other member countries to contemplate a similar divorce. Despite the uncertainty, I think the EU is well positioned for the future. I admire the EU for three reasons. First, because it has succeeded in maintaining peace in Europe for 60 years.
