Electricity tariffs will surge to a 33-month high today

SINGAPORE - Rising oil prices will see electricity tariffs for households surge by 6.6 per cent between this month and September - the third time tariffs have gone up in as many quarters. From today, electricity tariffs - on an upward trend for more than two years - will rise to a 33-month high of 27.28 cents per kilowatt hour (kWh), SP Services said yesterday. Including the Goods and Services Tax, the new rate is 29.19 cents per kWh, almost one-fifth more than what it was a year ago. On average, families who live in four-room HDB flats can expect to pay S$6.71 more per month. The electricity retailer said the hike is because higher oil prices in recent months - which increased 13.8 per cent to US$100.84 per barrel - have resulted in higher power generation costs.
