Man who believed he was Canadian because he was born there ordered deported to India after a string of petty crimes

OTTAWA - A 21-YEAR-OLD petty thief who believed he was Canadian because he was born here has been ordered deported to India, local media reported on Thursday. Deepan Budlakoti is the son of former domestic servants to India's High Commission in Ottawa. He was born at a hospital in the city in 1989. His parents won citizenship in 1997 but did not bother to make an application for their child as they assumed he was already Canadian by birth. After Budlakoti spent time in jail for a string of petty thefts and home break-ins, the government began investigating his status last year, and ordered an admissibility hearing. An immigration judge determined, according to documents obtained by the daily Ottawa Citizen, that he should be deported because children born in Canada to parents with diplomatic status are not considered citizens simply by birth.
