HDB spends S$10m to lock up water tanks: What? 10mil just for better locks? No Terminator robots?

SINGAPORE - Almost S$10 million will be spent to upgrade the locks on water tanks at Housing and Development Board (HDB) flats, the coordinating chairman of People's Action Party (PAP) town councils, Dr Teo Ho Pin, said yesterday. The move to tighten security of the tanks follows the incident at Woodlands Block 686B in May where the body of a maid was found in a water tank on the roof of the building. The tank, which provided water to some 168 households, has been replaced at a cost of S$40,000, following an outcry from residents who had expressed their uneasiness. Speaking at a press conference yesterday, Dr Teo, who is Mayor of North West District and Member of Parliament for Bukit Panjang constituency, said the new security measures involved restricting owners of keys to water tank covers, roof access and the pump rooms.
