PATTANI, Thailand: Political reconciliation and the cost of living are two issues that are expected to determine the outcome of Thailand's general election this Sunday. But voters in the conflict-ridden southern provinces have different expectations. For the majority Muslim Thai in the southern provinces, they hope for better education and fair treatment from the next government. As the election draws nearer, political parties are driving their message to voters across Thailand but in Pattani and other two restive provinces in Southern Thailand, the messages carry a different tune. A majority of the Thais in these provinces are ethnic Malay and Muslims. For decades, they have felt marginalized and neglected by the central government in the predominantly Buddhist kingdom.
