It’s just as well that Nathan has decided not to seek re-election for the presidency. Going by the online poll conducted by Temasek Review as well as other public vibes, it’s clear that Nathan would lose significantly and embarrassingly if he were to stand for election. In the first place, he should have declined the appointment right from the start of his 1st term. Since the government came up with the elected presidency so that the officeholder would have the moral authority to prevent raids on the reserves, it’s quite untenable for the elected president to claim to have this moral authority when he has never actually contested in a presidential election. Assuming the office of elected president via a walkover is not the way to go.
