TEHERAN - IRAN'S reformists, marginalised after the disputed 2009 re-election of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, appear to be regaining a tentative foothold in the political world, while the government squabbles with detractors in its own conservative camp. Many reformist figures were arrested, and some slapped with hefty jail terms, in the aftermath of the June 2009 presidential election and the crackdown against opposition supporters. The two main reformist leaders, former parliament speaker Mehdi Karroubi and ex-premier Mir Hossein Mousavi, were put under house arrest after they persisted in claiming that the election was fraudulent and led a protest movement, which resulted in scores of deaths.
