German student Rene Hoftstetter's life changed when he successfully signed up for [email protected] 2013

A casual internet search; a snap decision. It was the overseas internship he had hoped for since his undergraduate days, but little did René Hofstetter expect that a six-month stint in Singapore would stretch to a few years. Then a new graduate from the University of Applied Science in Darmstadt, René stumbled upon the [email protected] programme online just before the application closed. The recent recession of ’08 had left a third of his cohort struggling to find relevant work, and René had applied to semiconductor companies throughout Europe and America while helping in his parents’ health care business. “I knew that nearly all the major players in the semiconductor industry had fabs in Singapore,” he tells, “but about the country itself I knew next to nothing!” New perspectives Three months later, René had landed a Singapore International Pre-Graduate Award from the...
