His advice was based on his experience of having gone through much in his life, from 'what Singapore was to what it is today', said the 87-year-old. He acknowledged that in the course of Singapore's development, some government actions might have caused unhappiness to some people. But he urged Singaporeans to 'take the whole picture'. 'At the end of the day, it all was for the good of Singapore,' he said. He was speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the National University of Singapore commencement ceremony, when he was asked about his statement last Friday announcing his retirement.
